Coogee, From Its Streets to Its Pipes
Walk from Carr Street down toward Arden Street and the housing changes character block by block. Brick cottages dating back to Federation sit beside a mid-rise block put up sometime after the 1930s, then another cottage.
That patchwork, old bones and stacked units cheek by jowl, is exactly what drives the late-night calls from this pocket of coast.
Cottages this old still run supply lines and fittings sized for a much smaller household than what lives there now.
The renovations layered on top don't help. Updated kitchens and bathrooms, in the cottages and the units above them alike, depend on flexi-hose connectors under sinks and vanities.
